Angus Squared: Building the Bitcoin Ranch Herd Through Genetics

Exploring Red Angus, Black Angus, pedigrees, genetics, and the ideas behind Angus².

At Bitcoin Ranch, we’re building more than a cattle herd. We’re learning, experimenting, and making intentional breeding decisions with the future in mind.

Our growing herd includes both registered Red Angus and Black Angus cattle, two breeds known for strong genetics, desirable traits, and their importance throughout the beef cattle industry.

That combination is also the inspiration behind Angus² — Angus Squared.

What Is Angus²?

Angus² is a highly targeted trademark developed around our focus on both Red Angus and Black Angus.

The idea is simple: instead of limiting the ranch to one side of the Angus breed, we have the opportunity to study, select, and breed cattle from both. That gives us more room to focus on the individual genetics and traits we want to develop within the herd.

For us, Angus² represents a more intentional approach to building cattle genetics.

“I don’t need to have hundreds of cows to make a difference in genetics. I just have to buy and breed the cattle that produce offspring with the genetics I desire.”

Learning More About Cattle Genetics

One of the most interesting parts of growing Bitcoin Ranch has been learning more about genetics, phenotypes, pedigrees, and inherited traits.

Every animal brings something different to the breeding program.

Pedigrees can help us understand where certain genetics came from. Phenotypes allow us to evaluate the characteristics we can physically observe. Over time, breeding decisions allow us to combine those qualities and see how they appear in future offspring.

The deeper we get into cattle genetics, the more interesting it becomes.

You Don’t Need Hundreds of Cows to Build Better Genetics

One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that building a breeding program does not necessarily require hundreds of cattle.

What matters is being selective.

Instead of simply increasing herd numbers, our focus can be on finding cattle that possess the genetics and characteristics we want, breeding them intentionally, and evaluating the resulting offspring.

That means every addition to the herd can have a purpose. For a smaller and growing ranch like Bitcoin Ranch, this approach gives us the opportunity to build gradually while continuing to learn from each generation.

Red Angus + Black Angus

Working with both Red Angus and Black Angus gives Bitcoin Ranch an interesting foundation.

While they share Angus ancestry, each animal has its own pedigree, physical characteristics, genetic potential, and role within a breeding program.

Our goal is not simply to own cattle from both breeds. It is to continue learning how individual genetics can complement one another and how selective breeding can help us move toward the traits we want to see within the herd.

Building the Herd One Generation at a Time

Bitcoin Ranch is still growing, and there is a lot more to learn.

That is part of what makes this process exciting.

Every pedigree studied, every animal selected, and every new calf gives us another opportunity to understand cattle genetics a little better.

As the herd develops, we’ll have much more to share about the cattle, the breeding decisions behind them, and the genetics we’re working to build.

For now, we’re enjoying the process and building Angus² one generation at a time.
